Maine is well known for being the wildest of the New England states and is likely one of the more untouched regions of the entire country. People come here to enjoy the true wildness that New England has to offer—if you've ever wanted to camp in a place where you're not likely to see another soul for days, the wilds of Maine are for you. A constantly overlooked feature of Maine's wilds is the sea life—with so much shore surrounding the state, there's a lot of appreciation to be had for the beauty of life under the sea.

If you'd like to get an up close and personal look at the life that can be found in the waters near Maine, be sure to check out the Marine Resources Aquarium in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine. This small, yet informative, aquarium contains a 20-foot-long touch tank that features skates, sportfish, lobsters, and more.

If you happen to be in Maine during the summer months, there are also a variety of daily, live presentations having to do with the marine surrounding the state. The presentations occur during the months of July and August.

For those who are concerned about cost, another plus to this aquarium is that it is one of the cheaper ones in the area; it is only 3 dollars for adults to get in, and $2.50 for children and seniors. The aquarium is open from Memorial Day weekend until September 30th each year from 10am until 5pm.

Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk

If you happen to be in New England for the summer, you absolutely must spend some time in the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts. This is the area of New England that is likely most famous for its summer retreats - this unique curl of land has plenty of beaches and fine summer weather to enjoy, and you're sure to find the architecture and ambience of the place nothing less than charming.

Just off the coast of Cape Cod is a little island known as Nantucket, and this is where the Brant Point Light is located. Be sure to take the time to get off of Cape Cod and get onto this island, since Nantucket is the epitome of a summer vacation in New England. This lighthouse is the second oldest one in the entire United States, built in 1746. You unfortunately cannot enter the lighthouse, but the grounds surrounding it are open and fabulous for exploring. This is a beautiful place to hang out, particularly at sunset - you can get an incredible view of the harbor from here. If you happen to be out here at sunset, you can watch the tide roll in, the sun sink, and the boats pass by in the distance!

One of the greatest joys of a New England summer is the time spent sitting in beautiful places, watching the world go by. Be sure to get out to Nantucket if you happen to be in New England during the summer - you'll find plenty of things to do on the island!

Whale Watching

One of New England's top draws is the beauty of the Atlantic coastline. Virtually wherever you go in New England you are never far from water, and being close to the coast gives New England a unique flair and an opportunity for many kinds of entertainment that are not available in other parts of the country. A prime example of this is whale watching - clearly, there's only a limited amount of places in the country that you can engage in such an activity, and New England is one of the première places in the country to see these marvelous creatures in their natural habitat.

If you are at all interested in whale watching, the best time to do so is during the summer - most places offer whale watching tours from July 1 until Labor Day. This is the case with the Frances Fleet Whale Watching & Sea Fishing, located in Galiee, Rhode Island. This is the only whale watching operation in the state, so if you're looking to get out and see what there is to see off the coast of Rhode Island, Frances Fleet Whale Watching & Sea Fishing is where it's at!

In addition to whale watching, you can also go out deep-sea fishing for a variety of fish if you either are not interested in whale watching or it is the wrong season for it. But if you happen to be in New England during the summer, you should most definitely check out these massive animals at play!

Mystic Factory Outlets

One of New England's greatest assets is the amount of and quality of breweries that litter the area. New England's hops and brewing techniques are some of the most heralded in the country and many large name breweries make their home in this part of the country. One of the most notable breweries in the area s New Hampshire's RedHook Brewery, which is a great place to go if you'd like to sample some fine brew and learn a little more about one of the world's most popular beverages.

RedHook Brewery is often considered one of the most technologically advanced breweries in the country. In addition to the great beer that is on the premises for you to try (21 and over only, of course), there is a lot of great pub food to be had and the souvenir shopping is second to none. New England as a whole is blessed with some truly beautiful oceanfront property and views, and many people from across the country and around the world come to New England to enjoy what it has to offer in this vein. Hopefully, you're one of them!

A great way to enhance to enjoyment of the New England coast is to spend time learning about the inhabitants of the ocean itself. When you can identify the kind of crab that's crawling across the beaches at sunrise, you'll feel that much more connected to the area and have a deeper understanding of the life at hand. A great place to gain this understanding is at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. This small aquarium is well run and offers an incredible variety of animals for its size. Alongside the living exhibits, visitors can learn more about conservation measures taking place in the area through hands on exhibits. Mystic Aquarium is dedicated to giving its visitors a "feel for the sea," and education is dispensed largely through kinetic means.

Mystic Aquarium is truly one of New England's jewels, particularly if you have children in tow. Many kids might go comatose after too much Greek Revival architecture and even the great outdoors alone might make kids restless after a while. Try taking the family to Mystic Aquarium the next time that you happen to be in the area.

Ogunquit, Maine

Vermont's most popular tourist attraction is, hands down, the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Tour. While many people come to this state for the skiing and the mountains and the forest, it's hard to deny the allure of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. It's a great place to visit when you are in New England if you are at all a fan of ice cream - and best of all, the tour itself is very budget friendly. If you've ever wanted to know how your favorite Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavors are made and concocted, you will love this tour.

Clearly, this is also a great place to bring the entire family, provided that the entire family isn't lactose intolerant. Kids and adults alike love the tour, which is staffed by very energetic and knowledgeable tour guides, and ends in delicious ice cream samples. While touring a factory might not sound like the most exciting way to spend a day, the day definitely gets a lot better when it ends with ice cream! The tour itself is also interesting for those of you who have ever wondered how making ice cream works in a large factory environment. It's educational and delicious at the same time!

The Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Tour is located in Waterbury, Vermont. Be sure to make some time for it when you are in the Green Mountain State - always make time to smell the roses and taste the ice cream when you're in Vermont!

Providence Place

With a whopping 165 shops and three stores dedicated to the art of purchasing, you're sure to be able to find something that you like among the many offerings at hand. Even better, the Providence Place Mall differentiates itself from other places by having an impressive view of the Providence skyline, which is definitely a unique feature that most malls can't boast of! Major stores at Providence Mall include Nordstrom, Filene's, Lord and Taylor, Pottery Barn, and Abercrombie and Fitch. The mall also has an IMAX theater complex, as well as a whole host of eateries that you and your family can chose from. The city is New England's biggest, and there is an array of entertainment and culture attractions wide enough to tantalize any visitor. Whether you are walking along the banks of the Charles or strolling across the Boston Commons, it's guaranteed that you will have a great time in New England's arguably most engaging city.

One of the best things to do in Boston is to check out the wide range of museums that the city offers. The next time that you happen to find yourself in Beantown, be sure to spare some time to check out the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. This museum offers an astonishing array of art from all time periods and styles for visitors to enjoy, to the tune of 450,000 objects. That'll keep any art enthusiast (and even those who are less enthused) captivated for hours! The museum itself is broken up into several categories including the Art of the Americas; Art of Europe; Contemporary Art; Art of Asia, Oceania, and Africa; Art of the Ancient World; Prints, Drawings, and Photographs; Textile and Fashion Arts; and Musical Instruments.

Boston is a cultural Mecca for a great reason. Be sure to take the time to look at the many historical and art museums that are about the town - you're sure not to be disappointed when you visit! The Boston Museum of Fine Arts is one of the largest and most appreciated in the country for its art collection, and you'd be remiss not to check it out if you have the chance!

For those who are looking to enjoy a bit of what urban New England has to offer in terms of nature, look no further than Bushnell Park. This park is found in the heart of downtown Hartford, Connecticut, which makes it all the more impressive. Bushnell has a very impressive 41 acres of land for visitors to walk and run in. Considering that Hartford is one of New England's busier cities, the fact that the park is so big is really quite unique.

But if sheer size is not enough to get you to visit a park in the middle of one of New England's largest (and continually growing) towns, Bushnell Park is much more impressive than first glance would have you believe - and the fact that it's so large is definitely something to write home about! In addition to all of its acreage, the park busts 141 different varieties of trees, and also a carousel from 1914. This makes it a great place to bring kids who might be a little bit exhausted by all of the hardcore outdoors activities that New England offers, or if they look as if they might drop dead from boredom if they see another city street centering around architecture. Be sure to spend some time in Bushnell Park if you happen to be in Hartford, particularly during the summer - the best part of all might just be the price. You can get into Bushnell Park absolutely free, which makes it the most economically friendly choice possible!

Boston Chocolate Tours

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
